BiographyLived in Pittsburgh, PA since 1969. Born in Baltimore, grew up in Boston. A.B. Radcliffe College: history major; president of senior class. M.L.S., Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh. Children's librarian, Boston Public Library; professor of library science (specializing in literature for children and young adults) at West Virginia University for fifteen years retiring in 1993 as professor emerita. Married to Lawrence C. Howard (professor emeritus, University of Pittsburgh). Three daughters, one granddaughter, one grandson. Spent two years with the Peace Corps in the Philippines; lived one academic year in Nigeria as senior librarian at University of Maiduguri and collecting Kanuri stories. Interested in African folklore and African-American family history. |
